Discover Italian art, food and wine with an
Italian Countess
Alessandra is a countess from one of Central Italy's oldest families. She's created incredible travel experiences that will give you an insider's look into Italian culture that few tourists ever get to see. On these special trips, you'll do more than just look at religious paintings in old churches... you'll become an active participant in the beautiful village life and rural landscapes of Central Italy.
Most of
Alessandra's expeditions visit her 800-year-old ancestral palace in
Gubbio, Italy's best preserved medieval village. Spanning the village's
entire main piazza, the the
Palazzo features ancient frescoes and priceless Roman mosaics.
This is an amazing place to be headquartered while you tour Umbria (the
province we've come to call "Tuscany without the tour busses").
History of
Palazzo Ranghiasci.
Palazzo Ranghiasci is located on Piazza della Signoria in Gubbio, a small Umbrian village, considered to be one of Italy’s best-preserved medieval villages. The Palazzo runs the length of Piazza della Signoria (also known as Piazza Grande) and flanked on one side by the Palazzo dei Consoli (the museum that holds Etruscan tablets) and on the other by Gubbio’s city hall, the picturesque Palazzo Pretorio. Nothing stands in front of the Palazzo except the piazza itself which was built in the 1300’s on an incredible stone arch foundation. The view of the Umbrian countryside below, from both the square and the rooms of Palazzo , are unforgettable.
You being in Milan, just a short drive from Lake Como, at the edge of the Italian Alps and the Valtellina - a relatively unknown Italian winemaking jewel. Here the semi-dried Nebbiolo grape is transformed into the delicate, but forceful Sforzato wine. Then it's onto northeast Italy's luxurious Veneto region to sample Amarone and Recioto wines - the products of the ancient winemaking art of appassimento.
Next, you will make your way south to Central Italy and Gubbio, Italy's best preserved medieval village, where you can sample wines of the Sangrantino grape and dance till dawn on the piano nobile ”(noble floor) of Alessandra's privately-owned, 150-room ancestral palazzo.
From here, you will travel to the renowned wine region of Tuscany where you can wash down
ribollita and other spectacular local dishes with a bottle of Brunello
di Montalcino and Vino Nobile of Montepulciano. On the way, you'll meet
some of Alessandra's friends and local characters that will give you an
authentic feel for the Tucany region.
Finally, you'll come full circle by going back north to Piedmont, where you'll will receive an introduction to the Nebbiolo grape from a local viticulturalist in his privately-owned vineyard. The full bodied Barolo and Barbaresco, two of the world's finest wines, come from this region and you can try them accompanied by polenta con cinghiale. By the time you get to Turin a grand finale will be awaiting you - a farewell feast!
In all of these celebrated wine regions you will walk through ancient vineyards and remote hill towns where every vine plays a fundamental role in the life of each village.
Highlights:
• Six wine tasting experiences in the Valtellina, Veneto, Umbria, Tuscany and Piedmont.
• Three-course meals throughout the trip and complete introductions to the most significant culinary traditions of central and northern Italy at hidden and spectacular restaurants and trattorias.
• Two cooking classes lo learn how to prepare your favourite dishes.
