DAY 1         Christchurch
One of New Zealand's historic cities, with a distinctly English feel to it. Christchurch is a city of gardens, parks and churches designed in the mid-1800's.
It has grown into a vibrant community with theatres, galleries and festivals. The Botanic Gardens, tucked into a loop of the Avon River, nay be the most
beautiful gardens in New Zealand. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel in the city.

DAY 2         Christchurch to Twizel (330km)
Pick up your car today and begin your journey!  Heading west from Christchurch today, you'll cross the Canterbury Plains and rural farming communities of
Geraldine and Fairlie before entering bleak MacKenzie Country in the Mount Cook region. Stop at the Church of the Good Shepherd at Lake Tekapo for one
of New Zealand's most picturesque picnic spots - wonderful photo op!

DAY 3         Twizel to Dunedin (330km)
Travel inland via Omarama and Lake Pukaki, a spectacular turquoise-colored glacial lake. Pass through Oamaru and Palmerston in North Otago on your way to the
city of Dunedin - founded by Scottish migrants in 1848, it has the character of a university city. Situated on the Otago Peninsula, which is indented with bays, providing
many picnic and swimming sites.

DAY 4         Dunedin
Today, we suggest a drive out along the Otago Peninsula for a sample of the unique wildlife. At the tip of the peninsula is Taiaroa Head, a reserve that includes the
only mainland nesting site of the Royal Albatross. Rare Yellow-eyed penguins can be seen at the Yellow-Eyed Penguin Reserve, halfway along the peninsula.

DAY 5         Dunedin to Te Anau (292 km)
Heading further south through Gore, one of the world's top brown trout fishing areas. Continuing West to Te Anau, at the entrance to the Fiordland National Park.

DAY 6         Te Anau to Queenstown (170km)
Fiordland National Park is listed as a World Heritage Park. At 1.52 million hectares, it's the largest national park in New Zealand and one of the largest in the world.
Milford Sound is the best known, most easily accessible and one of the grandest of the fiords along the coastline. It runs past one of New Zealand's most famous
landmarks, Mitre Peak, which rises almost one mile, straight up from the water. This afternoon continue north along the shores of Lake Wakatipu into Queenstown.

DAY 7         Queenstown
The next two days are at leisure so you can explore all of Queenstown and the surrounding areas. If you're feeling adventurous, take a ride on the Shotover Jet,
try white-water rafting, take a helicopter ride, go bungy jumping or bush walking. Or, for a more relaxing day, take a cruise on Lake Wakatipu on TSS Earnslaw
or perhaps just have a picnic lunch and take in the beautiful surroundings.

DAY 8         Queenstown .      Day at leisure.

DAY 9         Queenstown to Fox Glacier (404 km)
Your route today takes you via the lakeside town of Wanaka and over the Haast Pass into the Westland National Park. The famous Fox Glacier is a 8.6 mile
long tongue of ice which descends to 750 feet above sea level. It is the most accessible glacier in New Zealand.

DAY 10         Fox Glacier to Hokitika (139 km)
Head north along the spectacular West Coast Highway 6, to Hokitika, which was the center of the richest gold-producing area in New Zealand in the 1960s;
you can learn about the area by visting  the West Coast Historical Museum.

DAY 11         Hokitika to Nelson (330 km)
Following the West Coast north and enter the Abel Tasman National Park; proceed on to the artisan town of Nelson, New Zealand's sunniest city,
flanked by the sea, golden beaches and hills.

DAY 12         Nelson to Picton
Drive via Havelock to Picton where your journey ends. From Picton, it's easy access to Marlborough Sounds. Your program ends today,

ITALY

Italy off the Beaten Path!

Discover Italian art, food and wine with an Italian Countess

Alessandra is a countess from one of Central Italy's oldest families.  She's created incredible travel experiences that will give you an insider's look into Italian culture that few tourists ever get to see.   On these special trips, you'll do more than just look at religious paintings in old churches... you'll become an active participant in the beautiful village life and rural landscapes of Central Italy.

Most of Alessandra's expeditions visit her 800-year-old ancestral palace in Gubbio, Italy's best preserved medieval village. Spanning the village's entire main piazza, the the Palazzo features ancient frescoes and priceless Roman mosaics.  This is an amazing place to be headquartered while you tour Umbria (the province we've come to call "Tuscany without the tour busses").

History of Palazzo Ranghiasci.

Palazzo Ranghiasci is located on Piazza della Signoria in Gubbio, a small Umbrian village, considered to be one of  Italy’s best-preserved medieval villages. The Palazzo runs the length of Piazza della Signoria (also known as Piazza Grande) and flanked on one side by the Palazzo dei Consoli (the museum that holds Etruscan tablets) and on the other by Gubbio’s city hall, the picturesque Palazzo Pretorio. Nothing stands in front of the Palazzo except the piazza itself which was built in the 1300’s on an incredible stone arch foundation. The view of the Umbrian countryside below, from both the square and the rooms of Palazzo , are unforgettable.

While the walls, ceilings and stone floors of the Palazzo date back to the 1300’s, the façade of the palace was built at the beginning of the 1800’s, following the dream of Marquis Francesco Ranghiasci, one of the most important players in the 800-year recorded history of the family.  Besides refurbishing the exterior, Francesco also completely remodeled the  interior and designed a large park behind it -- later this was granted to the city of Gubbio and named "Parco Ranghiasci".   In 1830, he hired famous artisans, painters and decorators who ended up working 30 years to finsih the new palace!  Francesco’s goal was to build the ideal setting to showcase the family’s power and influence in central Italy.

With its elegant and well-preserved interiors and the private garden, the Palazzo was declared a historical and architectural monument at the beginning of the 20th century.  There are ten reception rooms on the "noble floor", including a Grand Ballroom that can comfortably seat 70 people, a Music Room (for special shows) and the Palace's Grand Dining Room (a great place to hold a lavish dinner for a group of special guests).

Alessandra's Journey Through Italian Wine Country

You being in Milan, just a short drive from Lake Como, at the edge of the Italian Alps and the Valtellina - a relatively unknown Italian winemaking jewel. Here the semi-dried Nebbiolo grape is transformed into the delicate, but forceful Sforzato wine.   Then it's onto northeast Italy's luxurious Veneto region to sample Amarone and Recioto wines - the products of the ancient winemaking art of appassimento.

Next, you will make your way south to Central Italy and Gubbio, Italy's best preserved medieval village, where you can sample wines of the Sangrantino grape and dance till dawn on the piano nobile ”(noble floor) of Alessandra's privately-owned, 150-room ancestral palazzo.

From here, you will travel to the renowned wine region of Tuscany where you can wash down ribollita and other spectacular local dishes with a bottle of Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile of Montepulciano. On the way, you'll meet some of Alessandra's friends and local characters that will give you an authentic feel for the Tucany region.

Finally, you'll come full circle by going back north to Piedmont, where you'll will receive an introduction to the Nebbiolo grape from a local viticulturalist in his privately-owned vineyard. The full bodied Barolo and Barbaresco, two of the world's finest wines, come from this region and you can try them accompanied by polenta con cinghiale. By the time you get to Turin a grand finale will be awaiting you - a farewell feast!

In all of these celebrated wine regions you will walk through ancient vineyards and remote hill towns where every vine plays a fundamental role in the life of each village.

Highlights:

• Six wine tasting experiences in the Valtellina, Veneto, Umbria, Tuscany and Piedmont.

• Three-course meals throughout the trip and complete introductions to the most significant culinary traditions of central and northern Italy at hidden and spectacular restaurants and trattorias.

• Two cooking classes lo learn how to prepare your favourite dishes.
