Hawaii

Hawaii MapBackground.

There are 4 major Hawaiian islands that most people visit: Oahu, Maui, Kauai, the Big Island. The other two islands, Molokai and Lanai, are more remote and mostly visited by people who have either “been there, done that” or looking for a unique type of vacation. Below is a brief overview of each island.

Oahu.

If you’ve seen “Hawaii Five-O” you’re a little bit familiar with this island. It’s 610 square miles, with the major attractions of Diamond Head, the Arizona Memorial, I’olani Palace (the only US palace) and Hanauma Bay. The best known tourist area is Waikiki.

Maui.

“The Magic Isle”. One of the most popular islands, at 730 sq. miles.

Top Spots: Haleakala, Iao Needle, the road to Hana, and Lahaina.

Kauai.

Often regarded as the most scenic — without even knowing it, you’ve probably seen more of Kauai than you think — there have been so many movies shot in Kauai – “South Pacific”, “Jurassic Park”, “Six Days, Seven Nights”, just to name a few. At 553 sq. miles this island is lush and beautiful.

The Big Island.

Well, they don’t call it that for nothing! At 4,038 sq. miles it could almost contain all the other islands. Major attraction is the Volcanos National Park, waterfalls, rain forests and lava flows.
